How to Install the Lightweight, Low-Resource Acronis Agent on Linux and Windows Servers Print

  • 342

By default, the standard Acronis Cyber Protect installer deploys heavy cyber-security scanners, real-time threat engines, and background visual tools. For servers running on limited resources (such as 4GB RAM VPS instances), this causes high memory consumption. This guide explains how to install the bare-minimum file-level backup agent core on both AlmaLinux/Linux and Windows Server environments, keeping idle RAM usage near zero while fully utilizing your cloud storage pool.

Part 1: AlmaLinux / Linux Minimal Agent Installation

Step 1: Install Required Compilation Packages

Run the following command to update package references and install the basic compiler utilities needed to map the file system hooks:

sudo dnf clean all
sudo dnf install gcc make patch kernel-devel-\$(uname -r) -y

Step 2: Download the Linux Installer Binary

Log into Systron cloud portal at https://cloud.systron.net/. Navigate to Devices > Add > Linux. Copy the installer download link from your browser session, then run the following commands on your server (make sure to wrap your unique copied link inside double quotes):

wget -O CyberProtect_AgentForLinux_x86_64.bin "PASTE_YOUR_COPIED_URL_HERE"
chmod +x CyberProtect_AgentForLinux_x86_64.bin

Step 3: Run the Stripped-Down Installation

Execute the installer passing the following specific arguments. This restricts the installation strictly to the backup executor component and prevents heavy security components from touching your RAM:

sudo ./CyberProtect_AgentForLinux_x86_64.bin -a --skip-registration --id=BackupAndRecoveryAgent

Note: During installation on modern 6.x kernels, you may see a warning indicating that the SnapAPI kernel module failed to build/load. This is completely safe to ignore. SnapAPI is only required for full disk-image backups. Pure file and folder backups work flawlessly without it.

Step 4: Register the Linux Agent to the Cloud Console

Link your server directly to your branded cloud storage portal. Replace YOUR_USERNAME and YOUR_PASSWORD with your actual credentials:

sudo /usr/lib/Acronis/RegisterAgentTool/RegisterAgent -o register -t cloud -a https://cloud.systron.net -u YOUR_USERNAME -p YOUR_PASSWORD

Step 5: Verify Operations and Logs

Because the agent is stripped down to save RAM, command-line execution utilities like acrocmd are excluded. Backups are managed and executed directly via the web panel dashboard. You can watch the real-time background operation logs on the server using:

sudo tail -n 50 /var/log/Acronis/BackupAndRecovery/TrueImage.log

Part 2: Windows Server Minimal Agent Installation

Step 1: Download and Run the Custom Minimal Installation via PowerShell

Log into Systron cloud portal at https://cloud.systron.net/. Navigate to Devices > Add > Windows. Copy the installer executable download link from your browser session. Open an elevated PowerShell Window (Run as Administrator) and run the following commands to download your specific installer client programmatically and immediately launch the stripped-down deployment:

Invoke-WebRequest -Uri "PASTE_YOUR_COPIED_URL_HERE" -OutFile "AcronisCyberProtect_AgentForWindows_web.exe"

.\AcronisCyberProtect_AgentForWindows_web.exe --quiet --add-components=agentForWindows

Step 2: Track the Background Web Downloader Process

Because the web installer executes silently in the background, it takes a few minutes to fetch the packages. You can monitor the active download loop with this command:

while (Get-Process -Name "AcronisCyberProtect_AgentForWindows_web" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue) {
Write-Host "Still downloading and installing... Please wait."
    Start-Sleep -Seconds 10
}
Write-Host "Installation Completed successfully!"

Step 3: Register the Windows Agent to the Cloud Console

Once the download loop completes, navigate to the local utility directory and pair the machine to your branded portal. Replace YOUR_USERNAME and YOUR_PASSWORD with your credentials:

cd "C:\Program Files\BackupAndRecovery\RegisterAgentTool"

.\RegisterAgent.exe -o register -t cloud -a https://cloud.systron.net -u YOUR_USERNAME -p YOUR_PASSWORD

Part 3: Crucial Cloud Web Console Configuration Steps

To ensure your servers do not run into quota limits or experience resource bloat, perform the following steps after registering your devices:

  1. Log into your web panel at https://cloud.systron.net/.
  2. Select your registered device, click Protect, and choose Create Plan.
  3. Turn OFF all advanced cyber-security modules if toggled blue (Antimalware protection, URL filtering, Vulnerability assessment, and Patch management). Leave only the Backup module enabled.
  4. Change the "What to back up" parameter from *Entire machine* or *Disks/volumes* to Files/folders. Explicitly select or type only the specific target backup folders (e.g., your control panel backup directory like /www/backup/ on Linux).
  5. Licensing Error Fix: If you see an error stating "Cannot protect a device with assigned quota / Plan revoked due to licensing issue", look at the device profile details in the right-hand panel, select Change License / Workload Type, and switch it from *Server* to Virtual Machine or Workstation to match your provider's allocated account quota tier.
